ICD-9-CM Diagnosis Codes
ICD-9-CM codes are divided into volumes 1-3 by code type: either diagnosis codes, or procedure codes.
The International Classification of Diseases, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM), is used in assigning codes to diagnoses associated with inpatient, outpatient, and physician office utilization in the U.S. The ICD-9-CM is based on the ICD but provides for additional morbidity detail and is annually updated.
Volumes 1 and Volumes 2
ICD-9-CM Volume 1 is a tabular listing containing a numerical list of the disease code numbers.
ICD-9-CM Volume 2 is an alphabetical index to the disease entries.
Note: ICD-10-CM is the new diagnosis coding system that is being developed as a replacement for ICD-9-CM, Volumes 1 & 2. ICD-10-CM is expected to be implemented on October 1, 2015.
ICD-9-CM Procedure Codes
The third volume of ICD-9-CM is a classification system for surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures in hospitals and inpatient settings.
Volume 3
ICD-9-CM Volume 3 is an alphabetic index and tabular list.
Note: ICD-10-PCS is the new procedure coding system that is being developed as a replacement for ICD-9-CM, Volume 3. ICD-10-PCS is expected to be implemented on October 1, 2015.
